Peace in the Middle of the Noise

Peace in the Middle of the Noise

There is a particular kind of tired that has nothing to do with sleep. It is the tired that comes from a mind that will not stop running. Deadlines, parenting, marriage, work, ministry, finances, the endless scroll, and a hundred small decisions before breakfast. The world keeps promising that peace is coming, right after this season, this hard thing, this one more item checked off. But if you have lived very long, you already know the truth. Life rarely gets quiet.

We are continuing our Fruit That Lasts series, and after love and joy, we are turning to the fruit so many of us are quietly aching for. Peace. Here is the beautiful truth of Scripture. Peace is not found in a perfect circumstance. It is found in the presence of a perfect Savior.

Peace Is Not the Absence of Noise

For a long time I thought peace meant everything around me was calm and quiet. It took me a while to realize that is not peace. That is just a good day, and good days do not come often in this season. Real peace is different. It is having somewhere steady to stand while the noise is still happening.

Think of Jesus asleep in the boat during the storm in Mark 4. The disciples were panicking and bailing water, and He was resting. The storm was real, but so was His rest, because His peace was never dependent on the weather. Biblical peace is not pretending everything is okay. It is trusting that God is still sovereign when life is not.

Why Peace Is So Hard to Hold Onto

Most days our peace does not disappear because of one big thing. It gets chipped away by fifty small things before nine in the morning. We reach for our phones to fix the restlessness, and it never works. It just adds more open tabs to our minds.

Underneath so much of our restlessness is a quiet belief that everything depends on us. We try to control outcomes, predict tomorrow, and protect everyone we love. Ruth Chou Simons writes in Now and Not Yet that restlessness often begins with forgetfulness. We forget where true rest actually comes from. Like Martha in Luke 10, we get anxious and troubled about many things, while Jesus gently reminds us that only one thing is truly needed.

What Jesus Shows Us About Peace

When Jesus stood up in that boat and spoke three words to the storm, "Peace, be still," the wind and the waves obeyed Him. He was not peaceful because there was no storm. He was peaceful because He knew who was in the boat. Before He went to the cross, He told His friends, "Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you" (John 14:27).

That is the difference. The world offers a temporary peace that depends on favorable circumstances. Jesus gives His peace, a peace that remains because He remains. And He did not leave us alone to manufacture it. He gave us the Holy Spirit, our Helper, to continually point us back to Christ and remind us of His promises when fear tries to speak louder.

Four Ways to Grow Peace in Everyday Life

Peace is received, but it is also practiced. Here are four simple ways to grow it.

Pray it forward before you carry it. Bring every worry to God first, instead of turning it over and over in your mind. Philippians 4 promises that His peace will guard our hearts when we pray with thanksgiving.

Pause before you react. A few slow breaths and a quick prayer keep panic from setting the tone. Peace often lives in the space between what happens and how we respond.

Ponder what is true. Fill your mind with Scripture so that truth speaks louder than fear. Psalm 119:165 says, "Great peace have those who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble." When doubt gets loud, answer it out loud with God's promises.

Practice surrender daily. Peace grows every time we hand Him our pride, our control, our fear, and our expectations. Surrender is not weakness. It is trust in the One who is already holding tomorrow.

You Do Not Have to Start Over

If you take nothing else from this, take this. Peace is not something you achieve by finally getting everything under control. It is something you receive from Christ as you lean on Him. Wherever you are, even in the middle of the noise, His peace is available to you in this exact moment.

And when the worry creeps back in, and it will, you do not start over. You simply turn back to the Prince of Peace, who has not left the boat.
